The NEAR Protocol, Explained
Quick answer
NEAR is a sharded Proof of Stake network live since October 2020, known for human-readable account names (alice.near), 1.3-second blocks, and sub-cent fees. It carries native USDT and USDC, and in the mid-2020s repositioned around chain abstraction and AI agents.

Network fee: Typically under $0.01 per transaction in 2025–2026 — NEAR's fee design keeps costs at fractions of a cent. Third-party network figures, not Anytime Capital pricing — our pricing is on the fees & limits page.
How long does a NEAR transfer take?
NEAR produces a block roughly every 1.3 seconds and reaches finality in about 2–3 seconds. Transfers of NEAR or its stablecoins land effectively instantly; exchange crediting adds the only real wait.

Accounts you can actually read
NEAR's most user-visible feature: accounts are names, not hashes. alice.near is a real, native account — no bolt-on naming service — which makes payments feel like usernames rather than cryptography. Exchanges typically still use the 64-hex 'implicit account' format for deposits, so expect both forms in the wild; both are valid NEAR accounts.
Sharding that stayed invisible
NEAR's Nightshade design shards the network — splitting load across parallel segments — while presenting one seamless chain to users. It's the reason fees have stayed at fractions of a cent through demand spikes. The design scaled through the mid-2020s without the fee auctions that plague monolithic chains.
NEAR's second act has been 'chain abstraction' and AI: chain signatures that let NEAR accounts control assets on other chains, and an aggressive push (NEAR AI) to be the settlement layer for autonomous agents. Whatever that becomes, the consumer-facing network today is simply fast and near-free.
Dollars on NEAR
Both major issuers are native here — Tether since September 2022, Circle since 2023 — so USDT and USDC on NEAR are the real, issuer-backed assets, not bridges. Acceptance breadth is the caveat: fewer exchanges list NEAR-network stablecoin withdrawals than TRON or Ethereum ones, so confirm the receiving side before choosing this rail.

What does a NEAR address look like?
| Format | Looks like | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Named account | yourname.near | Human-readable account names are native to NEAR — no separate naming service needed |
| Implicit account | 64 hex characters | The format exchanges typically use for deposits |
