    The Cardano Network, Explained

    Quick answer

Cardano is a Proof of Stake network live since 2017, known for its research-driven development and Ouroboros consensus. Blocks arrive about every 20 seconds, standard transfers cost a formula-set fee near 0.17 ADA, and ADA holders can stake with no lockup period at all.

Network fee: About 0.17–0.2 ADA per standard transaction — a formula-set fee, so it doesn't spike with demand (fiat value tracks ADA's price). Third-party network figures, not Anytime Capital pricing — our pricing is on the fees & limits page.

How long does a Cardano transfer take?

Cardano produces a block about every 20 seconds, and platforms typically credit ADA deposits after 5–15 confirmations — a few minutes in practice. Fees follow a published formula and land around 0.17–0.2 ADA per simple transfer, regardless of congestion.

    What's actually different about Cardano?

Three things stand out against its peers. First, fees are set by formula, not auction — a simple transfer costs about 0.17 ADA whether the network is quiet or busy, making costs unusually predictable. Second, its eUTXO accounting model extends Bitcoin's design rather than Ethereum's. Third, its staking is fully liquid: delegated ADA never leaves your wallet, never locks, and can be spent at any moment.

Development has been deliberate by philosophy — peer-reviewed research first, then implementation — which supporters credit for Cardano's unbroken uptime since 2017 and critics cite for its slower ecosystem growth.

How does Cardano staking work for a holder?

You delegate the stake associated with your wallet to a stake pool; the ADA itself stays in your control and remains spendable. Rewards accrue every 5-day epoch, compounding automatically, with no unbonding period to exit. It is among the most consumer-friendly staking designs in crypto — no lockup risk to explain away.

US note: staking rewards are taxable income when received. That's general information, not tax advice.

    Sending ADA: what to expect

Cardano addresses are long — a Shelley addr1… address runs about 100 characters — and that's normal, not an error. Blocks arrive every 20 seconds, and most exchanges credit ADA after 5–15 confirmations, so transfers land in minutes. There is no memo or destination-tag requirement, which removes the most common deposit mistake other chains carry.
