    The Polkadot Network, Explained

    Quick answer

Polkadot is a shared-security network live since May 2020: a central relay chain finalizes blocks for many parallel chains (parachains), all secured by staked DOT. Blocks arrive every 6 seconds with finality inside a minute, and its addresses start with the digit 1.

How long does a Polkadot transfer take?

Polkadot produces a block every ~6 seconds and finalizes through GRANDPA typically within 30–60 seconds. Exchange deposits credit in a few minutes. Mind the existential deposit: relay-chain accounts below 1 DOT are reaped.

Compare every chain on one page: how long crypto transfers take on every major network.

Shared security, rented by the block

Polkadot's design bet: many specialized chains, one security budget. Parachains — independent chains with their own logic — plug into the relay chain, whose validators (backed by staked DOT) finalize everyone's blocks. The original slot-auction model gave way in 2024 to 'agile coretime,' where chains simply buy blockspace as needed, and the announced JAM redesign points the architecture further toward a general compute marketplace.

The 1-DOT rule that eats small balances

Polkadot's existential deposit is the sharp edge every new holder should know: a relay-chain account must hold at least 1 DOT, and an account dropping below it is reaped — the dust is gone. Never send an amount that leaves either side under the minimum, and don't 'test' with 0.1 DOT to a fresh address. (Asset Hub, where stablecoins live, uses a far smaller deposit.) This single fact prevents the most common Polkadot support ticket.

    Addresses that impersonate Bitcoin

Polkadot addresses use the SS58 format and start with the digit 1 — superficially resembling legacy Bitcoin addresses. They are unrelated networks: a DOT withdrawal goes only to a Polkadot address, and wallet software will reject true mismatches. When a form asks for DOT's network, the answer is 'Polkadot' (native), not an EVM or wrapped variant unless you deliberately chose one.
