    The Dogecoin Network, Explained

    Quick answer

Dogecoin is a Proof of Work network running since 2013, built on Litecoin's technology with one-minute blocks and roughly 5 billion new DOGE issued yearly. The meme is the brand; the chain underneath is a fast, cheap, remarkably durable payment network secured by merged mining with Litecoin.

How long does a Dogecoin transfer take?

Dogecoin produces a block every minute, and most platforms credit deposits after 2–10 confirmations — so a few minutes to about twenty in practice. Fees run around a cent, keeping DOGE genuinely usable for tips and small payments, not just memes.

Compare every chain on one page: how long crypto transfers take on every major network.

Is there a real network behind the meme?

Yes — and it's older than most of crypto. Dogecoin forked from Litecoin's codebase in December 2013 and has produced blocks every minute since, surviving every market cycle. Since 2014 it has been merged-mined with Litecoin: Litecoin miners secure both chains simultaneously, giving Dogecoin a share of one of Proof of Work's largest Scrypt hash rates rather than a small standalone one.

That's why DOGE payments actually work in practice: one-minute blocks, negligible fees, and support at virtually every exchange, payment processor, and crypto ATM in the US.

Does Dogecoin really have unlimited supply?

There is no cap, by design. Dogecoin issues a fixed 10,000 DOGE per block — about 5.2 billion per year. Because that absolute number never grows, the inflation rate falls every year as a percentage of outstanding supply (roughly 3.5% in 2026 against ~150 billion DOGE, and declining). The design goal was a spending currency with mild, predictable issuance rather than a hard-capped store of value.

Anyone comparing DOGE to Bitcoin should understand that difference: Bitcoin's pitch is scarcity; Dogecoin's is cheap, continuous usability.

What does sending DOGE cost, and how long does it take?

The network's reference fee is 0.01 DOGE per kilobyte — around a cent for a typical transaction at 2025–2026 prices, occasionally more during viral demand spikes. Blocks arrive every minute; exchanges commonly want anywhere from 2 to 10 confirmations before crediting, and conservative platforms up to 40 (about 40 minutes) after past reorg concerns.

For sending to friends or your own wallet, treat 2–5 minutes as normal. For exchange deposits, check the platform's stated confirmation count — that, not the chain, sets your wait.
