The Base Network, Explained
Quick answer
Base is Coinbase's Ethereum Layer 2, launched in August 2023 on Optimism's OP Stack. It confirms transactions in about two seconds for roughly a cent, has no network token of its own — ETH pays gas — and became one of the busiest consumer chains, with native USDC at its center.

How long does a Base transfer take?
Base confirms transactions in about two seconds — with sub-second 'Flashblocks' preconfirmations rolling out in 2025 — and Coinbase credits Base deposits especially fast, since it operates the chain. Fees run around a cent.

Does Base have its own coin?
No — and that's the most-searched Base question for good reason. Base launched without a token and Coinbase has repeatedly stated it has no plans for one (a fact that hasn't stopped years of speculation). Gas on Base is paid in ETH, and the chain's working currency for commerce is USDC. Anyone selling you a 'Base token' in 2026 is selling something that isn't the network's.
Why did Base grow so fast?
Distribution, again. Coinbase put an L2 one tap away from tens of millions of exchange users, made deposits and withdrawals to it near-instant and cheap, and pushed consumer apps — social, payments, trading — that settle in USDC. By 2024–2026, Base regularly led all L2s in daily transactions, and its 2025 'Flashblocks' upgrade cut effective confirmation to a fifth of a second.
For a consumer, the practical profile: Ethereum's address format and wallets, roughly a cent per transaction, and unusually smooth movement between Coinbase and self-custody.
Using Base without using Coinbase
Base is a public network — any EVM wallet can add it, and any platform can support it. The rule is the same as every EVM chain: the network selector at withdrawal decides where funds land, and a wallet must be viewing Base to see Base balances. Anytime Capital's buy flow delivers on the networks listed at checkout; for Base specifically, the common route our customers use is buying USDC or ETH and bridging or withdrawing via a platform that offers the Base network directly.

What does a Base address look like?
