The Aptos Network, Explained
Quick answer
Aptos is a Proof of Stake Layer 1 launched in October 2022 by former Meta engineers, using the Move language from the Diem project. It finalizes transactions in under a second for fractions of a cent, and carries native USDT (since 2024) and USDC.

How long does a Aptos transfer take?
Aptos finalizes transactions in well under a second — its Block-STM parallel execution engine was built for high throughput — so transfers land effectively instantly. Exchange crediting is the only wait most users see.

The Diem inheritance
Aptos is the most direct descendant of Meta's Diem stablecoin project: its founders led Diem's development, and Move — the language designed to make asset-handling bugs hard to write — is Aptos's native language. When Diem shut down in 2022, its engineering diaspora produced both Aptos and Sui; Aptos kept the account-based model closest to Diem's original design.
The pitch that survived: a chain engineered for payments-grade throughput and safety. Its Block-STM parallel execution engine processes transactions optimistically in parallel, which is why sub-second finality holds up under load.
Stablecoins made Aptos relevant
Aptos's 2024 turn was stablecoin adoption: Tether launched native USDT in August 2024, Circle followed with native USDC, and payment-focused integrations built on top. For consumer transfers, USDT-on-Aptos offers the familiar dollar with sub-second settlement and negligible fees — worth knowing when both sides of a transfer support it, though TRON and Ethereum remain the more universally accepted USDT rails in 2026.
Not EVM: what that means for you
Aptos addresses start with 0x but the chain is not Ethereum-compatible: MetaMask doesn't speak Aptos, addresses run longer than Ethereum's 40 hex characters, and tokens can't move between the chains directly. Use an Aptos-native wallet, match the network label on withdrawal screens exactly, and treat the address-length difference as your safety check.
Stablecoins on Aptos
| Stablecoin | Standard | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native (Tether-issued) | Major | Tether launched native USDT on Aptos in August 2024 — the chain's dominant dollar by volume | |
| Native (Circle-issued) | Supported | Circle brought native USDC to Aptos in 2024–2025 via its CCTP expansion |
What does a Aptos address look like?
| Format | Looks like | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard address | 0x + up to 64 hex characters | Longer than Ethereum's 40 — Aptos is a Move chain, not EVM-compatible |
