How Stripe's fee is worked out
Stripe's standard online fee has two parts: a percentage of the payment and a fixed amount per successful charge. For a US card that is 2.9% + 30¢, so the fee is the amount × 0.029 + $0.30. On a $250 sale that is $7.25 + $0.30 = $7.55, and you receive $242.45.
The fixed 30¢ is why small payments cost proportionally more. On a $10 sale Stripe's fee is $0.59, 5.9% of the sale; on $1,000 it is $29.30, 2.93%. If most of your sales are small, the fixed fee matters as much as the percentage.
Extras stack on top. A card issued outside the US adds 1.5%, and if Stripe also converts the currency it adds another 1%, so an international payment that needs conversion costs 5.4% + 30¢: $5.70 on $100. In person, Terminal is 2.7% + 5¢, and ACH Direct Debit is 0.8% capped at $5, which makes a $2,000 bank payment cost $5.00 rather than $58.30 by card.
What to charge so you receive an exact amount
To net a set figure, add the fixed fee to the amount you want and divide by one minus the percentage: charge = (target + $0.30) ÷ (1 − 0.029). To receive $500, charge $515.24; to receive $1,000, charge $1,030.17. The calculator's “What to charge” mode does this for any amount and rate, rounded up to the cent so you are never a cent short.
Grossing up a price is different from adding a separate card surcharge. Surcharges are restricted by card-network rules and some state laws: they are capped, must be disclosed before payment and are not allowed on debit cards. Building the fee into your price, or invoicing large amounts by bank payment, avoids the question. This is general information, not legal advice.
Stripe fees this calculator leaves out
The calculator covers the processing fee on each payment. Stripe prices some extras separately, at its published US rates as of October 2026:
- Instant Payouts: 1.5% of the payout, 50¢ minimum (US)
- Disputes: $15 per dispute, plus a counter fee to contest one (refunded if you win)
- Radar for Fraud Teams: 2¢ per screened transaction on standard pricing
- Monthly fee: $0 on standard pricing
The same sale with Anytime Capital
On a US online card payment, Anytime Capital Payments charges 2.75% + 30¢ against Stripe's 2.9% + 30¢: 0.15 points less, $0.15 on every $100 sale, or $900 a year for a business doing $50,000 a month in $100 sales. Neither charges a monthly fee, and new businesses pay 2.5% + 30¢ for their first 90 days.
Payouts are the other difference. Stripe's Instant Payouts are priced per payout; Anytime Capital sweeps settled sales into your Anytime Capital business account instantly, nights and weekends included, where they are already spendable on employee cards.
Stripe is still the better choice if you need Connect for a marketplace, Billing for metered subscriptions, Terminal hardware or its library of integrations. The full head-to-head covers where each one wins.
