Quick answer
How much does Shopify take from a $100 sale?
With Shopify Payments, $3.20 on the Basic plan (2.9% + 30¢), $3.00 on Grow (2.7% + 30¢) and $2.80 on Advanced (2.5% + 30¢), plus 1% on international cards. In person, Basic is 2.6% + 10¢ ($2.70). The plans themselves cost $29, $79 or $299 a month billed yearly, and a store that uses another processor pays Shopify a 2%, 1% or 0.6% third-party fee on top.

How Shopify Payments fees are worked out
Shopify Payments charges a percentage plus 30¢ per online card payment, and the percentage falls as the plan rises: the amount × 0.029 + $0.30 on Basic, × 0.027 on Grow and × 0.025 on Advanced. On an $80 order that is $2.62, $2.46 or $2.30.
International online transactions add 1%, and what Shopify calls premium cards carry a higher rate: 3.5%, 3.3% and 3.1% + 30¢ by plan. Shopify's blog puts currency conversion at 1.5% for US stores. In person, the rate is 2.6%, 2.5% or 2.4% + 10¢.
The third-party fee, and why it decides the store checkout
Shopify charges a third-party transaction fee when a store takes payments through any processor other than Shopify Payments: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced, on top of that processor's own fee. On a $100 order on Basic, another processor at 2.75% + 30¢ would cost $3.05 plus $2.00 to Shopify, against $3.20 with Shopify Payments.
That is why we do not suggest moving a Shopify store's checkout. Anytime Capital Payments is for the money that does not go through the store: wholesale invoices, deposits on custom orders, payment links sent by text, and sales at markets and pop-ups, at 2.75% + 30¢ with no plan fee.
What to charge so you receive an exact amount
Add the 30¢ fixed fee to the amount you want and divide by one minus your plan's percentage: on Basic, charge = (target + $0.30) ÷ (1 − 0.029). To receive $250, charge $257.78 on Basic, $257.25 on Grow or $256.72 on Advanced.
Grossing up a price is different from adding a separate card surcharge. Surcharges are restricted by card-network rules and some state laws: they are capped, must be disclosed before payment and are not allowed on debit cards. Building the fee into your price, or invoicing large amounts by bank payment, avoids the question. This is general information, not legal advice.
