How PayPal's fee is worked out
PayPal Checkout's fee is a percentage of the payment plus a fixed fee for US dollar payments: the amount × 0.0349 + $0.49. On a $60 sale that is $2.58, or 4.3% of the sale, and you receive $57.42.
The 49¢ fixed fee is the highest of the processors we compare, so PayPal's share of a small payment is large: $0.84 of a $10 sale, which is 8.4%. On $1,000 the fixed fee hardly matters and the fee is $35.39.
PayPal prices by product. The PayPal button is 3.49% + 49¢; card payments processed through Expanded Checkout are 2.89% + 29¢, though PayPal's fee table also lists 2.99% plus a fixed fee for standard card payments; in-person QR code and card payments are 2.29% + 9¢. International commercial transactions add 1.5%, and converting currency carries a 3% spread.
What to charge so you receive an exact amount
To net a set figure on PayPal Checkout, add the 49¢ fixed fee to the amount you want and divide by one minus 3.49%: charge = (target + $0.49) ÷ (1 − 0.0349). To receive $100, charge $104.12; to receive $500, charge $518.59. The calculator's “What to charge” mode works this out for any amount, rounded up to the cent.
Grossing up a price is different from adding a separate card surcharge. Surcharges are restricted by card-network rules and some state laws: they are capped, must be disclosed before payment and are not allowed on debit cards. Building the fee into your price, or invoicing large amounts by bank payment, avoids the question. This is general information, not legal advice.
PayPal fees this calculator leaves out
The calculator covers the fee on each payment. These are priced separately, per PayPal's published US fees as of October 2026:
- Currency: 3% spread on currency conversion (4% on some conversions)
- Disputes: $20 per chargeback
- Instant transfers to a bank: not published for business accounts; PayPal's consumer fee page lists 1.75% (25¢ minimum, $25 maximum)
- Monthly fee: $0
The same sale with Anytime Capital
For card and wallet payments, Anytime Capital Payments charges 2.75% + 30¢ against PayPal Checkout's 3.49% + 49¢: $3.05 rather than $3.98 on a $100 sale, and $27.80 rather than $35.39 on $1,000. PayPal's own card rate on Expanded Checkout, 2.89% + 29¢, is a cent cheaper than ours below about $7, and the calculator shows that too.
PayPal's strength is the button: buyers who trust it convert better when they see it. If your customers ask for PayPal, keep offering it. A PayPal option on Anytime Capital checkout is coming soon; today it takes cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay, under your own brand rather than PayPal's.
