What Square is genuinely good for
- Cafés, shops, salons and food trucks that take most of their money in person and want free POS software and inexpensive hardware.
- Sellers who want free next-business-day deposits and an in-person rate of 2.4% to 2.6% + 15¢, below most online rates including ours.
- Businesses that want point of sale, inventory and staff tools from one vendor.
Square is built for the counter
Square made card acceptance something a market stall could set up in an afternoon, and it is still very good at that. Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android is free, a contactless and chip reader is $59, the Terminal is $299, and the point-of-sale software that runs on them is free on the base plan. In person, 2.6% + 15¢ on Free, 2.5% on Plus and 2.4% on Premium are competitive rates with a published price for every line.
Square also charges no dispute fee today, though its terms let it start with notice, and next-business-day deposits are free. If most of your money is taken at a counter, Square is a strong default and this page will not pretend otherwise.

Online is where Square's pricing changed
Square moved to unified Free, Plus and Premium plans in late 2025, and third-party coverage reports that the Free plan's online rate rose from 2.9% to 3.3% + 30¢ at the same time, with the in-person fixed fee going from 10¢ to 15¢. Keyed-in and card-on-file payments are 3.5% + 15¢.
So the comparison depends on the plan. Anytime Capital Payments is 2.75% + 30¢ online with no monthly fee, which is 0.55 points under Square Free and 0.15 under Square Plus, before Plus's $49 a month. A business doing $10,000 a month online in $50 sales pays $390.00 on Square Free, $350.00 plus $49 on Plus, and $335.00 with us.
Instant transfers: 1.95% to reach your own money
Square's standard deposit is free and arrives the next business day. If you want it sooner, an instant transfer costs 1.95% of the amount, on top of the processing fee, with a $10,000 cap per transfer and a limit of one a day up to $2,000 for new sellers. On a $5,000 Saturday that is $98 to have it before Monday.
With Anytime Capital Payments, settled sales sweep into your Anytime Capital business account instantly, nights and weekends included, where they are already spendable on employee cards. From there money moves by RTP, FedNow, wire, ACH, local rails in 71+ countries (SEPA Instant, Faster Payments, PIX, SPEI, UPI, PayNow and mobile money) or same-day stablecoin transfers.
In person without a terminal, and when you still want one
Anytime Capital's in-person checkout is deliberately simple: key in the amount on any phone, tablet or laptop, the customer scans the code and taps to pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay or a card on their own phone, and the screen turns to Paid. There is nothing to buy, rent or charge.
That suits appointments, deliveries, markets and service businesses. A café with a queue at 8am, a bar running tabs or a shop that needs a cash drawer and a receipt printer will be better served by Square's hardware.
