What Braintree is genuinely good for
- Mid-size and enterprise online merchants that want cards, PayPal and Venmo through one gateway and one contract.
- Established businesses with the volume to negotiate custom or interchange-plus pricing.
- Engineering teams that want PayPal's wallets with a full vaulting and recurring-billing API.
Braintree is PayPal with a gateway contract
Braintree gives a development team PayPal, Venmo, cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay behind one SDK, with card vaulting and recurring billing. For a mid-size merchant that wants the PayPal wallets without PayPal's consumer-style checkout, it is a sensible choice.
Its card rate recently moved from 2.59% + 49¢ to 2.89% + 29¢, according to Braintree's own policy-update history. That made it cheaper on small tickets and more expensive on large ones: on a $1,000 sale the new rate costs $29.19, against $26.39 under the old one and $27.80 at 2.75% + 30¢.

Chargeback protection, sold by the percent
Braintree charges $15 per chargeback and sells Chargeback Protection from 0.4% of each transaction, or Effortless Chargeback Protection from 0.6%. On $100,000 a month, 0.4% is $400 a month whether or not a dispute arrives.
Anytime Capital Payments works on the other side of the problem, and does not insure disputes. Every account gets a 0–100 risk score on every payment, block rules by score, amount and card country, 3D Secure above an amount you choose, pre-dispute auto-refunds and evidence packs, so fewer payments turn into chargebacks in the first place.
No-code payments next to the API
Braintree is integrated through SDKs and its Drop-in UI; there is no hosted invoice or payment link on its fee page. That suits a product team and slows down an operations team that just needs to send a customer a bill.
Anytime Capital starts from the dashboard: payment links, branded invoices with reminders and deposits, email checkout, subscriptions and in-person scan-and-tap. When you want to automate, it offers a REST API, signed webhooks, an MCP endpoint so Claude and other AI agents can create payment links and invoices, and docs you can copy as Markdown.
After the sale
Braintree settles to the bank account on your merchant account and does not publish an instant payout option. With Anytime Capital, sales sweep into your Anytime Capital business account instantly, 24/7, and go on from there by RTP, FedNow, wire, ACH, local rails in 71+ countries or same-day stablecoin transfers.
