How to tell whether THORChain is actually down

THORChain goes down more often than a website does, and by design. The network halts itself automatically when a solvency check fails, and node operators can halt trading, signing or a single chain by vote; both happened within minutes on May 15, 2026, when a vault was drained, and the resulting trading halt lasted five weeks while the v3.20 fix shipped. Shorter halts of a single chain, for a hard fork, a client bug or a security concern, are routine and are posted in the community Discord and shown on the explorer. If swaps are refusing to quote, check the explorer for halt flags before anything else.

The second kind of outage belongs to the interface, not the protocol. THORSwap and other front ends have paused THORChain routes on their own, as THORSwap did during the January 2025 solvency scare, and a wallet's built-in swap can fail because that wallet's RPC or quote service is struggling. Trying a second interface is the fastest test. The third kind is the outbound queue: during congestion or a gas spike, a swap that was received and executed can wait hours for the destination chain transaction, and the explorer will show it as scheduled rather than failed.

None of these are fixed by a support ticket, because there is nowhere to send one. If your problem is that you sent a deposit with a bad memo or to a vault that had already rotated, that is not an outage either, and it is not recoverable. The Discord will help you confirm which case you are in.
