Bithumb was hacked in 2018 and 2019, and on February 6, 2026 an internal input error credited about 620,000 phantom bitcoin to 249 accounts, some of which was sold before a freeze, cratering its BTC price and triggering a Financial Supervisory Service investigation, fines and compensation orders. That was operational failure, not fraud, and Bithumb disclosed it, clawed most of it back and went to court for the rest. It is still the kind of event that makes people ask whether an exchange balance is the safest place to keep coins.
