Payment processor head-to-head
Shopify Payments vs Stripe
Shopify Payments is the processor inside a Shopify store; Stripe is a payments account you add to anything else. The real question is usually whether to sell on Shopify at all, so this page sets Shopify's rates, plan by plan, against Stripe's standard rate, with what each monthly plan costs.
Updated October 2026. Figures from each company's published US pricing; where a figure is not published, we say so.

Quick answer
Is Shopify Payments cheaper than Stripe?
On Shopify's Basic plan the online rate is the same, 2.9% + 30¢. Grow (2.7% + 30¢) and Advanced (2.5% + 30¢) are lower, but the plans cost $29 to $299 a month billed yearly. On a Shopify store, keep Shopify Payments: any other processor adds Shopify's third-party fee of 2%, 1% or 0.6% by plan (October 2026).

The short version
Which to choose
Choose Shopify Payments if
- You sell through a Shopify store, where any other processor adds Shopify's third-party fee on top of its own rate.
- You are on Grow or Advanced, whose 2.7% + 30¢ and 2.5% + 30¢ online rates are below Stripe's standard rate.
- You want online store, point of sale and inventory in one system.
Choose Stripe if
- Your checkout lives on your own site, app or platform rather than a Shopify store.
- You need subscriptions, usage billing or payouts to sellers through Connect.
- You would rather not pay a monthly plan: Stripe's standard pricing has no monthly fee.
On a Shopify store, the third-party fee settles it
Shopify Payments is available only to stores on Shopify, and Shopify charges a third-party fee when a store uses any other processor: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced, on top of that processor's own rate. For a Shopify store's own checkout, that usually settles the question in Shopify Payments' favour.
Stripe comes in for everything outside a Shopify store: a custom site, an app, a SaaS product, a marketplace paying out sellers, or subscription billing more involved than a store needs.
Rates by plan, and what the plan costs
Shopify Payments charges 2.9% + 30¢ online on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow and 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced. The plans cost $29, $79 or $299 a month billed yearly ($39, $105 or $399 billed monthly), and they buy the store builder, hosting and checkout as well as the rate. Stripe's 2.9% + 30¢ needs no plan, but it is only the payments part: the site and checkout pages are yours to build or buy.
International online transactions add 1% on Shopify Payments, and international cards add 1.5% on Stripe. Stripe adds 1% when currency conversion is needed; Shopify's currency conversion fee for US stores is 1.5%, per a Shopify blog post.
Payouts and in-person sales
Shopify Payments pays out on a US minimum of 3 business days, combining Friday-to-Sunday sales into one payout; payouts to Shopify Balance can arrive in 1 business day, and there is no on-demand instant payout to an outside bank. Stripe's standard schedule is 2 days for many lower-risk US businesses, with Instant Payouts at 1.5% (50¢ minimum).
In person, Shopify POS charges 2.6% + 10¢ on Basic, 2.5% + 10¢ on Grow and 2.4% + 10¢ on Advanced. Stripe Terminal is 2.7% + 5¢, cheaper than Shopify Basic below $50 a sale and dearer above it.

The third option
Where Anytime Capital fits
Anytime Capital Payments is not a replacement for a Shopify store's checkout: Shopify's third-party fee makes Shopify Payments the cheaper choice there.
