    Answer

    What is Faster Payments?

    Quick answer

Faster Payments is the UK's real-time payment system, launched in 2008 and run by Pay.UK, that moves pounds between UK accounts in seconds, 24 hours a day, every day. Payments are addressed by sort code and account number, checked by Confirmation of Payee, and capped at £1 million each by the scheme.

Faster Payments is the reason a bank transfer in the UK feels instant. Since May 2008 the Faster Payments Service has moved pounds between UK accounts in seconds, at any hour, and in 2025 it carried a record 5.5 billion payments, up 9% on 2024 (Pay.UK): salaries, rent, supplier invoices and the money people send each other. It is sterling-only and domestic, which matters if you are paying a UK contractor or supplier from the US. This page covers how a Faster Payment moves, how long it really takes, the £1 million limit, Confirmation of Payee and the UK's fraud-reimbursement rules, and how Faster Payments compares with CHAPS, SWIFT and the US instant rails.

What is Faster Payments, and who runs it?

The Faster Payments Service (FPS) is the UK's real-time retail payment system. It was built by a group of UK banks, launched on May 27, 2008, and is operated today by Pay.UK, the company that also runs Bacs. It carries single immediate payments from online and mobile banking, standing orders, forward-dated payments and returns — all in sterling, between accounts at banks, building societies and payment firms that connect to it directly or through an indirect-access provider.

Customers see money arrive in seconds, but the banks settle with each other afterwards. Faster Payments uses deferred net settlement: participants' obligations are netted and settled across their accounts at the Bank of England several times each business day, against funds the banks pre-position there, so a participant's failure does not leave payments already made unsettled.

The scheme maximum rose to £1 million per payment in February 2022, from £250,000, which is why Faster Payments now carries many business payments that once went by CHAPS. Volume has grown every year since: 5.5 billion payments in 2025, according to Pay.UK.

How does a Faster Payment move between UK banks?

A Faster Payment is a credit push: the payer's bank sends money out, and the payee never pulls it. Before the payment leaves, the payer's bank runs Confirmation of Payee and its own fraud checks; then the central infrastructure routes it to the payee's bank, which accepts and credits it, usually within seconds.

The payee is credited at step 4; settlement between the banks at step 5 comes afterwards. A payment held for a fraud check stops at step 3, which is where the two-hour allowance gets used.

How long do Faster Payments take, and do they work on weekends?

Most arrive within seconds. The scheme allows up to two hours, which is the time a sending bank may use when it holds a payment for a fraud check — the reason a first payment to a new payee can feel slower. Since October 2024, UK payment providers have also been allowed to delay an outgoing payment by up to four business days when they have reasonable grounds to suspect fraud.

Faster Payments never closes: weekends, bank holidays and Christmas Day included. The UK's other rails do. CHAPS, the high-value same-day system, runs from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. UK time on business days, and Bacs, which carries most payroll and Direct Debits, takes three working days from submission to credit. For a US sender, that means a CHAPS payment has to be released by early afternoon Eastern time, while a Faster Payment can go at any hour.

The UK is five hours ahead of Eastern time for most of the year. CHAPS closes around 1 p.m. ET on UK business days; Faster Payments, like FedNow and RTP, never closes.

What are the Faster Payments limits and costs?

The scheme maximum is £1 million per payment. Banks set their own limits under it, by account type and channel, and personal online banking limits are usually far lower; some banks also cap the daily total or add checks above a threshold. A payment above a bank's Faster Payments limit goes by CHAPS instead.

UK banks generally don't charge individuals for Faster Payments. Business accounts are different: many business tariffs include a per-payment charge or a monthly allowance, and prices vary by bank. These are the rules that apply in 2026:

What details do you need to make a Faster Payment?

A sort code, an account number and the account holder's name. The sort code is six digits, usually written in pairs (20-00-00), and identifies the bank and branch; the account number is eight digits. Building society accounts sometimes need a roll number as well, which goes in the reference. The reference itself carries up to 18 characters — enough for an invoice number, not for a sentence.

Payers abroad usually need something else. An international payment to a UK account is addressed by IBAN — a UK IBAN is GB, two check digits, a four-letter bank code, then the sort code and account number — plus the bank's BIC. The same account can take both, a Faster Payment from inside the UK or a SWIFT payment from abroad, but they travel differently and arrive on different clocks.

Use the name exactly as the account holder's bank has it. For a limited company that is the registered company name, not a trading name; Confirmation of Payee also checks whether the account is personal or business, and a mismatch on either flags the payment.

How do Confirmation of Payee and the UK fraud rules protect a Faster Payment?

Confirmation of Payee (CoP) checks the name on a new payment against the account before the money leaves. The six largest UK banking groups were directed to adopt it in 2019 and 2020, and the Payment Systems Regulator extended it to around 400 more firms in two waves, the second by October 31, 2024. The payee's bank answers with a match, a close match (showing the actual name), no match, or a check that couldn't be completed, and it flags a personal name used for a business account or the other way round.

Since October 7, 2024, victims of authorised push payment (APP) scams — people tricked into sending a payment themselves — must be reimbursed by their bank up to £85,000 per claim, with the cost split between the sending and receiving firms. The rule protects consumers, micro-enterprises and charities, not larger companies, which carry the risk themselves. For a business paying UK suppliers, the controls are its own:

    • Confirm any change of bank details by phone, on a number you already had, before the next payment goes out.
    • Treat a close match as a reason to compare names, and a no match as a reason to stop and ask.
    • Keep adding or editing a payee separate from approving payments to them.
    • Report a suspected scam to your bank at once: money can only be traced while it is still in the receiving account.

Faster Payments vs CHAPS, Bacs, SWIFT and FedNow

Within the UK, the choice is mostly about size and certainty. Faster Payments covers almost everything up to £1 million in seconds; CHAPS takes over for larger or time-critical payments such as house purchases; Bacs remains the batch rail for payroll and Direct Debits. Across borders, SWIFT reaches UK accounts from anywhere, but on bank business days. FedNow and RTP are the closest US equivalents, and their $10 million network limits sit well above Faster Payments' £1 million.

How does a US business pay a UK supplier by Faster Payments?

Faster Payments only connects accounts inside the UK, so a US bank can't send one. From an ordinary US account, a payment to a UK supplier is an international wire: you send dollars or pounds over SWIFT to the supplier's IBAN and BIC, a correspondent bank may sit in the middle, and the supplier's bank credits it as an incoming international payment — often after deducting its own receiving fee, and after converting at its rate if you sent dollars.

The alternative is a provider that holds sterling in the UK. You pay in dollars, it converts and sends a domestic Faster Payment from a UK account, and the supplier sees an ordinary UK credit for the full amount in pounds. Ask any provider:

    • Whether it pays by Faster Payments or sends an international wire into the UK.
    • What rate it uses, and whether you see the sterling amount before you approve.
    • What it needs from the supplier: for a domestic payment, the sort code, account number and legal name are enough.
    • Whether your invoice number arrives in the 18-character reference, so the supplier can match the payment.

How do Faster Payments work on Anytime Capital?

An Anytime Capital business account pays UK suppliers and contractors in pounds over Faster Payments, from the same dollar balance your customers pay into, alongside local rails in 71 countries and SWIFT everywhere else. To add a UK recipient you enter the six-digit sort code and eight-digit account number, plus the person's name or the company's legal name; a sort code or account number in the wrong format is rejected before the recipient is saved.

The review step then gives you the numbers in both currencies: the exchange rate, the fee on its own line, the dollars taken from your balance and the pounds that arrive, with Faster Payments named as the rail and the expected arrival shown as usually within minutes. Only the people you make owners or admins can send money out; everyone else on your team can see payouts but not move funds. Processing is subject to compliance review, and the processing times page shows how each method behaves.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Are Faster Payments instant?

Usually: most arrive within seconds, at any hour. The scheme allows up to two hours, and a bank can hold a payment for up to four business days when it has reasonable grounds to suspect fraud.

Do Faster Payments go through on weekends and bank holidays?

Yes. Faster Payments runs 24 hours a day, every day of the year, including bank holidays. CHAPS and Bacs only process on UK business days.

What is the maximum amount for a Faster Payment?

£1 million per payment at the scheme level, since February 2022. Your bank's own limit is usually lower, especially for personal accounts, and larger payments go by CHAPS.

Can you cancel a Faster Payment?

Not once an immediate payment is sent: it is final. Standing orders and forward-dated payments can be cancelled before their date. If you were tricked into paying a scammer, tell your bank at once; consumers, micro-enterprises and charities can be reimbursed up to £85,000.

What is the difference between Faster Payments and CHAPS?

Faster Payments is for payments up to £1 million, credited in seconds at any hour. CHAPS has no scheme maximum and settles each payment individually at the Bank of England the same day, but only between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. UK time on business days, and banks usually charge more for it.

Can I receive a Faster Payment from the US?

Not from a US bank directly: it can only send an international wire to your UK IBAN, which arrives in one to two business days. A provider that holds pounds in the UK can pay you by Faster Payments instead, as a domestic credit.

    What is Confirmation of Payee?

A UK name check that runs before a payment is sent. The payee's bank says whether the name entered matches the account — a match, a close match with the real name shown, or no match — and whether the account is personal or business.
