When SWIFT is the right choice
SWIFT connects more than eleven thousand banks worldwide, which makes it the payout that reaches almost everywhere. Where your country has a local rail, such as SEPA in Europe, PIX in Brazil or SPEI in Mexico, the local payout is faster and paid in your own currency. SWIFT covers the rest: Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, the Gulf states, Morocco, Ukraine and many more.
Dollars or euros
A SWIFT payout is sent in US dollars or euros. If your account is in another currency, your bank converts on arrival at its own rate, so a USD or EUR account, where you have one, avoids that conversion.
International wires can pass through one or more correspondent banks, which may deduct their own charges before the money reaches you. Ask your bank which intermediary it uses for incoming USD or EUR if you want to know in advance.
Getting the codes right
The form checks your BIC's format and your IBAN's checksum before the order opens. In countries without IBANs (Australia and Japan among them) enter your account number in the same field.
Australia, Japan and Korea
Banks in Australia use a six-digit BSB plus an account number; for an incoming SWIFT payment you give the bank's BIC and your account number, and some banks ask for the BSB too. Japanese and Korean banks are reached by BIC and account number, usually with the branch named.
Because these countries don't use IBANs, enter your account number in the IBAN field. Your bank's international transfer page lists exactly what it needs for an incoming payment in US dollars or euros.
SWIFT payouts: questions
How long does a SWIFT payout take?
Usually one to three business days, depending on your bank and any correspondent banks in between.
Can I be paid in my own currency by SWIFT?
SWIFT payouts are sent in US dollars or euros; your bank converts on arrival if your account is in another currency. Countries with a local rail can be paid in their own currency instead.
Why did I receive slightly less than the payout?
An intermediary or receiving bank may deduct a charge from an international wire. Local payouts avoid intermediary banks.
My country doesn't use IBANs. What do I enter?
Enter your account number in the IBAN field, along with your bank's SWIFT/BIC code.
What do I enter for an Australian bank account?
Your bank's SWIFT/BIC code and your account number; check your bank's incoming international payments page in case it also wants the BSB included.
