    What is a16z?

    Quick answer

a16z is Andreessen Horowitz, one of the world's most influential venture capital firms, founded in 2009 by Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz. The name abbreviates 'Andreessen' — the sixteen letters between A and Z. The firm invests across stages and sectors, and runs a dedicated crypto arm, a16z crypto, launched in 2018.

Few firm names show up in term sheets, tech Twitter, and policy debates as often as a16z. Here's what the firm actually is, why founders care whose money it is, and what its presence on a cap table tends to signal.

    Origins: the software-eats-the-world firm

Marc Andreessen co-created the Netscape browser; Ben Horowitz ran Opsware, which they sold to HP in 2007 for about $1.6 billion. They founded Andreessen Horowitz in Menlo Park in 2009 and articulated its thesis in Andreessen's 2011 essay 'Why Software Is Eating the World' — the argument that software companies would take over industry after industry, which the following decade largely validated.

Early checks into Facebook, Twitter, Airbnb, GitHub, Coinbase, and Stripe established the track record; the firm has since grown into one of the largest venture platforms in the world, managing tens of billions of dollars across funds.

    The platform model everyone copied

a16z's structural innovation was staffing a venture firm like a services company: beyond investing partners, it employs large teams for recruiting, marketing, policy, and go-to-market that portfolio companies can draw on. The pitch to founders — capital plus an operating machine — forced much of the industry to respond with platform teams of their own.

The firm also broke the industry's media habits, building its own publications and podcasts and generally treating distribution as something a capital firm should own.

    a16z crypto

The firm was among the first major VCs to commit institutionally to digital assets, launching a dedicated crypto fund in 2018 and scaling the practice into the industry's reference crypto investor — its fourth crypto fund, raised in 2022, was reported at about $4.5 billion, the largest of its kind at the time. Portfolio names span Coinbase, Uniswap, OpenSea, and much of serious crypto infrastructure.

a16z crypto also publishes widely used industry research — its annual State of Crypto report — and engages heavily on US crypto policy.

What a16z on a cap table signals

Practically: deep pockets for follow-on rounds, an operating platform your team will actually use, and a brand that makes later fundraising and hiring conversations easier. It also signals expectations — a16z underwrites to very large outcomes, and its companies are generally expected to swing accordingly.

For crypto and AI startups specifically, the firm's density in both sectors means its portfolio is often your customer list, your partner list, and your competitor list at once.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Why is it called a16z?

It's a numeronym: 'Andreessen' has sixteen letters between the A and the Z (and 'Horowitz' conveniently starts where it ends). The abbreviation became the brand.

What stages does a16z invest in?

Everything from seed to growth — it's a multi-stage platform with dedicated funds for sectors including crypto, bio, games, and American Dynamism (defense and industrial).

    How big is a16z?

Among the largest venture firms in existence, managing tens of billions across its fund families — including the roughly $4.5 billion crypto fund four raised in 2022.

Does a16z run an accelerator like Y Combinator?

Not in YC's batch format. Its early-stage programs (like the crypto startup accelerator CSX) exist, but the core model is direct investing plus the operating platform, not cohort-based acceleration.
