A discount code from the **Discounts** page can also discount subscription plans. Turn on **Also use on subscriptions** when you create a code, or choose **Use on subscriptions** from an existing code's menu.

## How long a discount lasts

| Duration | What it discounts |
| --- | --- |
| First payment | The first payment, after any free trial. |
| Several months | The first 2 to 36 monthly payments. Monthly plans only, since it counts payments. |
| Every payment | Every payment for as long as the subscription lasts. |

How long a discount lasts is fixed once set; create a new code for new terms. Which plans a code covers (all, or the ones you pick) and **New customers only** can change at any time. A new-customers-only code is refused for an email that has subscribed to, or paid, your business before.

The code's expiry date and use limit work as on payment links, and a use on a subscription counts toward the same limit. Archiving a code stops new uses; subscriptions that already have it keep their discount for its duration.

## Where subscribers use a code

- At checkout: the plan's subscribe page shows **Have a discount code?** whenever one of your subscription codes covers the plan. The order summary shows the discounted first payment and what later payments cost.
- On an existing subscription: open the subscriber on the **Subscriptions** page and choose **Add discount**. It starts with their next payment. A subscription holds one code at a time.

Receipts for discounted payments show the discount, and the subscriber's billing page and your dashboard show which code a subscription has.

## Changing a subscriber's plan

From a subscriber's details on the **Subscriptions** page, choose **Change plan**, pick the plan and when it starts. You see exactly what happens before you confirm.

| When | What happens |
| --- | --- |
| Switch now | The new plan starts today, charged in full to the subscriber's saved card. The unused part of the current period is refunded to the card that paid it: what they paid times the share of the period left, rounded up in their favour and never more than they paid. If the new plan's payment is declined, nothing changes. |
| At next renewal | Nothing changes until the current period ends. Then the new plan starts and is charged to the saved card. You, or the subscriber, can undo it until then. |

> **Note:** A discount on the current plan doesn't carry over to the new one. Add a code to the new subscription if you want it to.

To let subscribers change plans themselves from your billing page, mark the plans they may switch to (**Let subscribers switch to it** in a plan's menu) and turn on **Subscribers can switch plans** on the **Plans** tab.
